Uniform

At Milton Mount Primary School we place great importance on smart school uniform and expect all pupils to be appropriately dressed. All clothing, footwear and bags must be marked clearly with the child’s name. Sweatshirts, cardigans and PE t-shirts can all be purchased with the school logo but this is not compulsory.

Children need to wear their PE uniform to school on their PE days.

Shoes

Sensible shoes are necessary for winter and wet weather. Boots should not be worn all day; a pair of shoes should be brought in to change into. Sandals should be sturdy and sensible and suitable for running in the playground. Flipflops and heels are not permitted.

Coats

Outdoor coats should be hard wearing and have a strong loop for easy hanging. Part of the curriculum takes place outside in all weathers. It is therefore important that your child comes to school on rainy days with a light raincoat and suitable footwear.

Hair

Small bows and sensible headbands should be worn. Large ‘party’ bows/headbands are not permitted. Long hair must be tied back. Extreme haircuts/styles are not allowed.

Jewellery

Your child may wear a watch to school.

Pupils may wear one small, plain stud earring in each earHoops, dangly, or novelty earrings are not permitted, as they pose a safety risk.

PE and Physical Activity

  • Earrings must be removed for all PE lessons, swimming sessions, and other sporting activities, in line with national health and safety guidance.
  • Pupils should be able to remove their own earrings independently. Staff are not permitted to remove or insert earrings for children.
  • If a child is unable to remove earrings, they must be covered with medical tape, which should be provided by the parent/carer. This is a temporary measure only, permitted for up to 6 weeks following initial piercing.
  • After this 6-week healing period, earrings must be removed for PE.
  • It is the responsibility of parents/carers to ensure their child can remove earrings for PE. Where this is not possible, on each occasion the school office will contact parents in writing to inform them of the situation.
  • The child will still be allowed to participate in PE with a pair of taped studs, but parents will be made aware that this is at their own risk. Children will not be allowed to participate in PE with hooped or dangly earrings due to the increased risk of injury that they pose.

New Piercings

  • Families are strongly encouraged to arrange ear piercings at the start of the summer holidays, allowing time for the healing period before returning to school.
  • During the healing period, earrings must be taped for PE for a maximum of 6 weeks. After this period, they must be removed.

Responsibility

  • Parents/carers are responsible for ensuring their child can remove earrings or has them safely covered during the healing period.
  • The school does not accept responsibility for any loss, damage, or injury related to earrings.

Inclusion and Equality

  • The school values and respects each pupil’s right to express their identity and culture.
  • Where there are specific cultural or religious reasons for wearing earrings that may not align with this policy, parents/carers should contact the Headteacher to discuss an appropriate and safe arrangement.

Make-Up and Nail Varnish

Make-Up and Nail Varnish is not permitted and must be removed before attending school.
