The National Curriculum for Art and Design states that:

 “Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.”


Art is huge. It means so much, to so many cultures, communities and individuals. As a result, it would be impossible to cover everything. At our school we aim to provide children with a wide range of experiences across a number of disciplines in preparation for their secondary school career. Deep at the heart of our curriculum lies CREATIVITY. In this subject, which is unlike any other, children are encouraged to be free to express themselves and to use art as a way of recording various thoughts, feelings and responses in all areas of the curriculum. We encourage children to try things out, be brave and to reflect. We help them to find the joy in Art and perhaps most importantly, the ability to express themselves in this way.


Our Art curriculum is carefully planned so that lessons across units and year groups build upon creative experiences and skills learned. Where possible links are made to topics to give context to learning and provide the children with a ‘why’.

We care about every child’s growth in art and this takes the form of careful, consistent formative assessment. Verbal feedback is the main manner in which this is expressed as evidence suggests that this kind of feedback in the most effective. Teachers are knowledgeable about their pupils and are able to discuss their next steps.


As a result of the above approaches we aim to help children develop skills that are valuable and transferable to all areas of curriculum and life.
