English WRITING
Intent
At Milton Mount, we are WRITERS! Our English Writing curriculum is designed to empower our learners by providing a curriculum that not only imparts essential skills but also encourages individual expression and creativity. Skill development is at the core of our curriculum, ensuring that students progressively acquire and refine the tools necessary for effective communication. The skills are built in small steps throughout the school, practised at a sentence level before being embedded in the context of a longer piece of writing. We also recognise the dynamic nature of writing and want to equip our children with all the tools necessary to navigate this. To this end, we develop the children’s understanding of purpose within writing, building on previously-learnt skills. Students will be taught to tailor their writing to specific purpose and audiences, promoting a keen consideration of the impact their words can have.
Do More:
At Milton Mount, our English writing curriculum is designed to empower students to engage actively and frequently in writing across a variety of genres. We encourage our pupils to write more often, with clarity and purpose, whether crafting stories, composing letters, or exploring poetry. By increasing the volume of their writing, students refine their skills and develop a stronger command of language, enhancing their ability to express themselves with confidence in any context!
Know more:
We aim for our students to have a deep understanding of the English language, including an expansive vocabulary, a robust grasp of grammar, and the ability to apply different writing techniques. Knowledge of literary devices and an appreciation of different authors’ styles are integral parts of our curriculum. This knowledge not only supports their writing development but also enhances their reading comprehension and critical thinking skills.
Remember more:
Our curriculum is structured around key memory strategies that help students retain and recall writing skills and language conventions effectively. We focus on repetition, with each skill being taught at least 3x a year; application in new contexts, with 5 writing processes per term; and focused call-back, with SPAG lessons to embed grammatical rules and vocabulary into long-term memory. Regular practice and revisiting previous learning are critical strategies that ensure our students remember more of what they learn.
Experience more:
Milton Mount provides a rich array of writing experiences, exposing students to a diverse range of media and audiences. From participating in letter-writing campaigns to writing workshops to entering national writing competitions, we strive to give our students authentic, real-world writing opportunities. These experiences are designed to ignite a passion for writing and to show the relevance of their skills beyond the classroom.
Consider more:
Our curriculum considers the needs of each student, recognising and embracing diverse backgrounds and learning styles. We incorporate culturally relevant materials and them see that resonate with our diverse student body, fostering a more inclusive and engaging learning environment. Additionally, we consider the emotional and cognitive aspects of learning to write, supporting the students in overcoming barriers and building resilience in their creative expression.
