School Ethos

At Milton Mount we aim to provide a happy, safe environment where the children can develop both academically and emotionally. We want to give the children a desire to be life long learners who care about the world and people around them. We will teach them to take responsibility, to challenge themselves, to have the confidence to work well independently and the ability to get on well with others both in and out of the classroom. Despite being a large school, we pride ourselves on treating each child as an individual, celebrating each child's unique talents.

Learning Together for Life

This is our school motto - voted for by staff, parents and governors. We believe all children should be encouraged to achieve their full potential and aspire to do the best they can in all areas. Every member of the school community should feel safe, secure, valued and of equal worth. Being able to work well and cooperate with others is a vital life skill. It is our belief that through engaging with the learning opportunities that we plan, our children will be encouraged in their journeys to becoming a valuable part of the local community and the wider world. Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is a part of the learning opportunities within our school to ensure that our pupils are prepared for life in modern Britain.

British Values

At Milton Mount Primary School we promote fundamental British values (democracy, rule of law, tolerance of different faiths and beliefs, mutual respect and individual liberty) through a comprehensive programme of PSHE and assemblies. We value diversity amongst our pupils and families, and celebrate this in our teaching and learning. Everyone in school, both adults and children, are encouraged to find out about and appreciate different cultures and beliefs. Respect is a core value and there are high expectations for how we treat each other. As the children work, they also learn to be independent, confident and explain their own views of the world around them. There are lots of opportunities to make choices in the tasks the children do and they often get involved in having their own say in things they do. Each year we hold elections for School Councillors and other important roles within the school. Each class is responsible for creating their own class charter to tie in with the United Nation's Convention for the Rights of the Child. Everyone endeavours to keep the school's Golden Rights: be kind; be fair; always try your best and be safe.

Golden Rights

Our Golden Rights are at the heart of our school ethos. These, in their simplest form, sum up the four core behaviours we expect all our children to aspire to. They include: be kind; be fair; always try your best and be safe. All our children know and understand this expectation. They also know we do not always 'get it right' and are good at reflecting when their behaviour is not as we might hope it to be. Any behaviours that get in the way of anyone getting these golden rights are quickly addressed. Children know there are consequences for their actions and know that we will try to be fair in sorting out any issues.

Rights Respecting School

As a rights respecting school, we care a lot about children's rights. We teach the children about the United Nation's Convention for the Rights of the Child(UNCRC) which is an agreed set of expectations for all children across the world. Many countries have signed up to this international charter that includes things like 'all children have the right to an education' (Article 28) and 'every child has the right to a standard of living that is good enough to meet their physical, social and mental needs' (Article 27). In total there are 54 articles but articles 1-42 are the articles that we focus on in school. We learn the difference between wants and needs and look at how we can achieve these rights for more people in the world. We are currently working on becoming a level 2 rights respecting school.
