MFL

INTENT

At Milton Mount we are linguists. Our mission is to cultivate an appreciation for language learning and the Francophone world in Key Stage 2. We provide all children with the opportunity to become confident communicators with a secure foundation in French.

Our curriculum begins in Year 3, where French phonics, essential vocabulary and useful greetings are explored. As children progress Year 6, the children will master increasingly complex grammar, including gender, adjective agreement and verb forms. Every child is supported and challenged to reach their full potential as a linguist, with the confidence and curiosity to continue languages into secondary school and beyond.

DO MORE

Our curriculum is carefully structured and sequenced, so every learner develops both linguistic skill and cultural appreciation. Lessons are vibrant, engaging and culturally rich, sparking curiosity and encouraging children to view languages as a gateway to understanding diverse perspectives and developing empathy.

We value making mistakes as an essential part of the learning process. Children are supported to take linguistic risks, build resilience, and gain the self-assurance that strengthens learning across all subjects.

Children interact with French through dialogues, skits, role-play, music and peer conversations. Learning builds systematically on prior knowledge, with clear links made between French, English and any additional languages spoken in our community. Carefully scaffolded teaching ensures children feel a sense of achievement as they see their skills grow over time.

KNOW MORE

Through our MFL curriculum, children develop a secure understanding of the world and the cultures within it. They learn to read, write, speak and listen with increasing accuracy and independence, gaining practical language skills they can use beyond the classroom.

Children explore how languages have evolved, how French connects to English, and how cultural traditions shape identity. These broader perspectives help children appreciate global diversity and engage confidently in an interconnected world.

REMEMBER MORE

Songs, gestures, stories, games and skits support strong vocabulary and phonics recall. Pupils regularly revisit language from previous lessons, units and years, strengthening long-term memory. They break down new questions using familiar sentence structures and known vocabulary, enabling them to translate and respond with growing independence.

EXPERIENCE MORE

Hands-on experiences, art, music, games, weather forecasts and cultural celebrations - bring language learning to life. Children share personal experiences with languages from home or travels, strengthening the bridge between classroom learning and real-world multilingual experiences.

CONSIDER MORE

Our intent goes beyond teaching French as a subject. We aim to foster a lifelong love of language and culture, build core skills for success at secondary school, and equip pupils with practical communication skills for real-world interactions. By nurturing curiosity, resilience and critical thinking, we help pupils become confident global citizens.

IMPLEMENTATION

To create authentic and engaging language-learning experiences, Milton Mount uses the Language Angels scheme as the basis for all planning, ensuring a high-quality, well-sequenced French curriculum across Key Stage 2. Language Angels provides a clear progression of vocabulary, phonics, grammar and cultural understanding, enabling teachers to deliver lessons that are both ambitious and accessible to all learners.

We adopt a neurolinguistic and highly interactive approach to help pupils recall, apply and build upon previous learning. Lessons are structured to develop the four key language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing - through meaningful, practical contexts. Units are carefully mapped so knowledge is revisited, deepened and applied in increasingly sophisticated ways over the four years of KS2.

Learning is personalised. Teachers build strong pedagogical relationships and adjust instruction to meet the needs, strengths and interests of every pupil. This ensures that children of all starting points feel supported and capable of success.

Lesson Structure

  • Sticky starters help pupils recall vocabulary, grammar and phonics through translations, oral questions, games, gestures, music and songs.

  • New learning is introduced through a research-informed progression, building from phonics and simple phrases to increasingly complex structures and authentic communication.

  • Lessons include a range of whole-class, group, paired and independent activities so that pupils collaborate, practise and take ownership of their learning.

  • Children engage in role-play, sentence-building, games, songs, dictionary tasks, and carousel learning, moving beyond memorisation to true linguistic exploration.

  • Formative assessment is woven throughout lessons to identify misconceptions, guide next steps and target support where needed.

  • Pupils routinely share their learning - a performance, a dialogue, a piece of writing, a song or a weather forecast to take pride in their progress and build confidence.

By using Language Angels and integrating neurolinguistic principles, we ensure every child develops secure foundations in French, strong cognitive skills, and a passion for lifelong learning.

IMPACT

At Milton Mount, our approach celebrates language learning, cultural diversity and the unique experiences each child brings. Through consistent planning using Language Angels, pupils benefit from a curriculum that builds systematically, ensuring strong progression from Year 3 to Year 6.

Children leave KS2 with a secure understanding of French and the confidence to use it. They gain not only linguistic competence but also critical thinking, independence, resilience and cultural awareness, alongside skills that prepare them for secondary school and life beyond.

By the end of KS2, pupils will:

  • Develop a deep appreciation for languages and global cultures.

  • Build strong conversational skills, able to communicate with increasing fluency and confidence.

  • Strengthen reading and writing skills, applying vocabulary and grammar with accuracy.

  • Recognise links between French, English and other languages, supporting wider literacy development.

  • Use correct grammatical structures, including gender, adjective agreement and position of adjectives.

  • Expand their phonics knowledge and achieve accurate pronunciation.

  • Work collaboratively, developing teamwork and problem-solving skills.

  • Build confidence in expressing ideas, asking questions, reflecting and researching independently.

  • Develop a genuine love for languages and cultures, with curiosity that extends beyond the classroom.

  • Leave KS2 with a secure foundation for secondary French and an enthusiasm for future language learning.
