Music

INTENT

At Milton Mount, we want to maximise every child’s potential by providing them with engaging experiences and opportunities. We believe that Music is one such subject that enhances the curriculum in a variety of different ways. Music increases children’s listening and concentration skills (both in terms of oracy and communication), their creativity and decision-making abilities, as individuals and when working with others. We want our children to become confident musicians; as performers through singing and playing instruments, as composers and as active listeners to music, introducing them to music from the past, present and around the world. Whilst developing the core skills, knowledge and understanding of the curriculum is paramount for learning, instilling a life-long love of music is of just as much importance for children’s wellbeing.

IMPLEMENTATION

The current Music curriculum has been written in line with the DfE’s Model Music Curriculum which was introduced in Spring 2021 and

we have a specialist music teacher who delivers class music throughout the whole school. Our ‘know more, do more, remember more’ approach to teaching is applied, using repetition both within each unit and in future units/year groups to ensure skills, knowledge and vocabulary is taught, embedded and consolidated. The 4 key areas of musicianship - singing, listening, composing and performing - are interwoven in our curriculum, alongside the explicit teaching of the interrelated dimensions of music - pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, structure and appropriate musical notations. The children are exposed to a variety of genres and styles of music from across the world, in both class lessons and through the use of assembly music. A range of instruments are used including tuned and un-tuned percussion, recorders, Djembe drums, Boomwhackers, ukuleles and keyboards. The use of singing is embedded throughout the curriculum and in our weekly singing assemblies. Extra-Curricular opportunities are available including music tuition in a range of musical instruments and the Junior Choir.

IMPACT

Our curriculum goals are to nurture a love and enthusiasm for Music alongside children making good progression of skills in order to meet the National Curriculum expectations. We encourage our children to become confident musicians, reflective listeners, creative composers and resilient, motivated learners whilst appreciating a range of music and responding appropriately and with their own preferences. The children perform at the end of each unit, be it their own composition or songs and pieces that they have rehearsed, and are exposed to music where they can gain an understanding of different cultures and traditions.
